Vinyl is a resilient floor made in layers: a backing, a printed timber or stone design and a clear wear layer on top. It is thinner and softer underfoot than hybrid or laminate, copes well with spills and is easy to clean, which is why it is popular in kitchens, rentals and shops.
Glue-down vinyl, such as Royal 3mm Vinyl Plank and Karndean Art Select, is fixed to the subfloor with adhesive for a firm, permanent finish. Loose lay vinyl, such as Karndean LooseLay Longboard and LooseLay Originals, has a heavy backing that holds it in place without adhesive, so individual planks can be lifted and replaced. We recommend the right type for your rooms at the measure.
Our vinyl ranges run from 2.5mm to 5mm thick. Thin vinyl is useful where floor height matters, for example next to existing floors or under doors. The wear layer is the clear protective top coat: 0.55mm on most of our ranges and 0.7mm on Royal 5mm Vinyl Plank.
Because vinyl is thin, bumps, cracks and grout lines underneath can show through. The subfloor needs to be smooth, so levelling is often part of the job. We check this at the measure and include any preparation in your quote.
Vinyl copes well with spills, and several of our ranges, including LooseLay Longboard, Art Select and LooseLay Originals Tiles, are listed as waterproof on their product pages. Either way, the subfloor must be smooth, clean and sound. Our installation is covered by a 2 year installation warranty, and each range carries its own manufacturer's product warranty.
