A hybrid board has a rigid core with a printed timber or stone design on top, protected by a clear wear layer, and usually an acoustic backing underneath. The boards click together and float over the subfloor, with no glue or nails. Six of our seven ranges have a waterproof core, so the boards will not swell from everyday spills the way laminate can; Royal Hybrid Herringbone is described by its maker as water resistant.
Our hybrid ranges run from 6.5mm to 10mm thick. Thicker boards feel more solid underfoot, while thinner boards make it easier to meet door heights and the edges of other floors. The wear layer is the clear protective top coat: 0.5mm on Royal 6.5mm Premium, 0.55mm on Korlok and 0.7mm on Royal Hybrid Pro 9mm and Royal Hybrid Herringbone. Royal 10MM Extreme is rated AC5 for wear. The right choice depends on your rooms and subfloor, and we go through it at the measure.
A waterproof core makes hybrid a practical choice where the living area runs into the kitchen; for these areas choose one of our waterproof-core ranges. Wipe up spills and standing water promptly, and check the range's installation guidelines before laying it in a bathroom or laundry. Hybrid is floated over the subfloor with expansion gaps at the walls, so the subfloor must be flat, clean and sound. Hybrid can often go over existing tiles if they are flat and firmly fixed; we check grout lines and any uneven tiles at the measure.
