Choosing Flooring to Suit Your Interior Style

May 8, 2026

Choosing flooring by interior style comes down to three things: colour, board format and finish. Light and white-washed oak suits coastal and Scandinavian rooms, concrete and stone looks suit industrial spaces, and herringbone, chevron or Versailles parquetry suits classic and heritage homes.

What flooring suits a coastal or Hamptons home?

Coastal and Hamptons rooms lean on light, airy colours, white joinery and natural textures. Light and white-washed oak do most of the work, and a matt or brushed finish keeps the look relaxed.

European Oak Plank comes in 39 colours across Natural, Prime and Select grades, including whites such as Casper White and Lime Wash. Royal 14/2mm Oak has eight colours from white washes to mocha and a 20 year residential wear warranty. For a beach house kitchen, Royal AquaCore Oak pairs a genuine 3mm Oak surface with a water-resistant core.

See our guide to choosing engineered timber flooring colours.

What flooring suits a Scandinavian interior?

Scandinavian style is about calm, pale rooms and simple furniture. Pick a pale neutral oak with a low-sheen finish, laid in long boards down the length of the room so the floor stays quiet.

European Oak Plank colours such as Light Neutral and Raw Neutral suit this look. For a timber look with a waterproof core, Royal Hybrid Pro 9mm has a 0.7mm wear layer and a low-sheen 3D surface in 1680 x 228mm boards.

Scandi bedrooms often use soft, neutral carpet. Hause is 100% wool with a modern Berber look in nine neutral heathered colours. See our guide to the best carpet for bedrooms.

What flooring works in a modern minimalist home?

Modern and minimal interiors look best with fewer lines on the floor. Wide, extra-long boards mean fewer joins, and a matt surface cuts glare.

Royal Procore Laminate comes in extra-long 2265 x 192mm boards with an AC4 surface and over 72 hours of water resistance. Royal 5mm Vinyl Plank has an ultra-matte finish, an anti-stain coating and a 0.7mm wear layer, in 1524mm boards up to 228mm wide.

What flooring suits an industrial interior?

Industrial style borrows from warehouses: brick, black steel and raw concrete. Concrete and stone-look tiles give that feel underfoot.

Korlok tiles from Karndean come in stone, marble and concrete looks, in 475 x 600mm tiles that are 6.5mm thick with 5G click locking. Looselay Originals Tiles are 500 x 610mm loose lay tiles in stone and concrete looks, with a lifetime residential warranty. Opus Tiles add stone, marble and terrazzo looks in 915 x 457mm tiles, also with a lifetime residential warranty.

What flooring suits a classic or heritage home?

Federation homes, older terraces and classic interiors suit patterned timber. Herringbone, chevron and Versailles parquetry add detail, and warm brown tones work with period joinery.

Bespoke Versailles 15mm uses hand-assembled 600 x 600mm panels in 15mm Prime grade European Oak, and Bespoke Versailles 20mm uses 800 x 800mm panels in 20mm oak, each in four colours. European Oak Herringbone has 600 x 120mm blocks in twelve colours, and European Oak Chevron has 600 x 90mm boards in ten colours.

For a busy hallway, Royal Hybrid Herringbone blocks have a 0.7mm wear layer. Not sure which pattern to pick? Read herringbone vs chevron flooring.

Which timbers suit an Australian style home?

Australian hardwoods bring warm colour and strong grain. Spotted Gum has lively grain and colour variation, Blackbutt is paler and more even, and Jarrah is a deep red brown.

Royal AquaCore Aussie Species puts a real 2mm hardwood surface in Spotted Gum, Blackbutt, Jarrah or Sydney Blue Gum over a water-resistant core. Sidura 1 Strip offers Blackbutt, Spotted Gum and Tasmanian Oak in a long 1-strip plank with a matt brushed or gloss finish. Royal Aus Timber 14/3mm comes as planks or herringbone blocks, and Traditional Solid Flooring covers 26 species supplied raw for sanding and finishing on site.

How do kids, pets and open plan living change the choice?

Style comes first, but the way you live decides the material:

  • Kids and pets. Look for a strong wear layer or surface rating. Hybrid boards with a 0.7mm wear layer suit busy homes, and RoyalStep Laminate 12mm is AC5 rated, the highest rating in our laminate range.
  • Spills and wet areas. Hybrid with a waterproof core suits kitchens and laundries. Timber and laminate are not waterproof. Our Royal laminates are water resistant, and Royal AquaCore Oak has a water-resistant core, though its installation guide rules out bathrooms and laundries.
  • Open plan. One floor through living, dining and kitchen keeps the space connected. Pick a product that suits the wettest room in that run.
  • Bedrooms. Carpet adds warmth. Freedom is a 100% triexta cut pile twist that can be cleaned with cold water, in 30 colours. See our full carpet range.
  • Apartments. Check your strata by-laws before choosing a hard floor. Some schemes set acoustic requirements or ask for a test report.

Flooring looks to consider in 2026

A few looks worth considering:

  • Matt and brushed finishes with visible grain in place of high gloss.
  • Warm mid tones and sandy beiges alongside the classic white-washed oaks.
  • Patterned floors such as herringbone and chevron in entries, hallways and dining rooms.
  • Wider, longer boards for open plan rooms with fewer joins.
  • Stone, marble and terrazzo looks for kitchens and laundries.
  • Hard floors in living areas with soft carpet in the bedrooms.

Frequently asked questions

What flooring suits a Hamptons style home?

Light oak and white-washed oak in long, wide planks with a matt or brushed finish suit a Hamptons home. European Oak Plank and Royal 14/2mm Oak both include white and pale colours.

What is the difference between herringbone and chevron?

Both are classic parquetry patterns. Herringbone blocks have square (90 degree) ends and are laid in a staggered zigzag, while chevron boards are cut at an angle so the ends meet in a clean point.

Can I use one floor through an open plan home?

Yes. One floor through the living, dining and kitchen area keeps the space looking connected. Choose a product that suits every room in that run. For a kitchen, look at a hybrid with a waterproof core or Royal AquaCore Oak with its water-resistant core.

What flooring suits a home with kids and pets?

Hybrid boards with a 0.7mm wear layer and AC4 or AC5 rated laminate suit busy homes, and Freedom triexta carpet can be cleaned with cold water. Timber and laminate are not waterproof, so wipe up spills quickly.
