In a commercial kitchen, aged care bathroom or school canteen, the floor has one big job: keep people on their feet. Safety vinyl flooring does exactly that, with slip resistance built right through the surface, a hygienic finish and colours that no longer look clinical.

What is safety vinyl flooring?

Safety vinyl is a slip-resistant sheet vinyl. Hard particles such as aluminium oxide, silicon carbide or quartz are built into the wear layer, so the grip lasts through daily use and cleaning. It comes in wide rolls, which means fewer seams, and those seams are usually heat-welded for a smooth, easy-clean surface.

Slip ratings made simple

In Australia, slip resistance is classified under AS 4586. You will see three types of rating on a spec sheet:

• P0–P5 – the wet pendulum test. The higher the number, the more grip in wet areas.
• R9–R13 – the oil-wet ramp test. Important for commercial kitchens where grease is present.
• A, B, C – the wet barefoot test, for showers, ensuites and change rooms.
