Laminate is made in layers: a tough wear surface, a high-definition timber image, a high-density fibreboard (HDF) core and a stabilising backing. The boards click together and float over an underlay, giving a timber look with a hard-wearing surface.
AC ratings measure how well a laminate surface resists wear. Royal Procore, Royal Laminate 8mm and Clix are rated AC4; RoyalStep Laminate 12mm is rated AC5, the highest of our ranges.
Laminate is water resistant, not waterproof: its core is fibreboard, which can swell if water sits on it. Royal Laminate 8mm is rated for 48 hours of water resistance and Royal Procore for over 72 hours. Wipe up spills promptly, and choose hybrid or vinyl for bathrooms and laundries.
Our laminate runs from 7mm to 12.3mm. Thicker boards feel more solid underfoot, and Royal Procore's 2265mm boards suit large, open rooms with fewer joins.
Laminate's hard-wearing surface suits family homes, though no floor is scratch-proof. Use felt pads under furniture and mats at the doors. Read more about the best flooring for pets.
Laminate floats over an underlay, and many buildings set acoustic requirements for hard floors. Check your strata by-laws before you choose; our guide to the best flooring for apartments covers what to ask.
Both have a rigid board and a printed design; hybrid has a waterproof core, laminate a fibreboard core. Compare them in our hybrid vs laminate guide, or browse our timber flooring.
Laminate is floated over an underlay with expansion gaps at the walls, so the subfloor must be flat, clean and sound. It can often go over existing tiles if they are flat and firmly fixed. Our installation is covered by a 2 year installation warranty, and each range carries its own manufacturer's product warranty.
Try any of these floors in a photo of your own room with our Room Visualiser, or see the samples in person at a showroom: laminate flooring in Penrith, Hornsby, Campbelltown and Logan. Or book a free in-home measure and we will bring the samples to you.
A few questions to work through before you choose, so the floor suits the room as well as your taste.
Laminate suits living areas, bedrooms and hallways. For bathrooms and laundries, choose hybrid or vinyl instead.

Compare the AC rating: AC4 suits busy homes, and AC5 is our most hard-wearing.

In apartments, check your strata by-laws for acoustic requirements and the underlay needed.
Look at samples in your own light, as colour can change between a showroom and your home.
